Mar 1, 2005 - Day 238 in Dambulla, Sri Lanka

Dambulla is a couple hours north of Kandy and is home to old Cave temples. The caves are cut out of enormous granite which towers several hundreds feet into the sky. You walk up a path way half a mile or so to the cave entrance with expansive views of the country side. The cave complex is a collection five caves, ranging in size from 20 feet by 10 feet for the smallest one … to 150 feet by 75 feet for the biggest, something more like a cave cathedral. Inside of the caves there are murals and cave paintings on the walls that are over 400 years old. There are many Buddha statues made out of stone, which apparently was quite a feat, because when they were made the builders only had access to rudimentary tools. The photos are from the inside of the cave temples, and the view from outside the entrance. The last photo is of the “Golden Temple” at the base, before you climb up to the cave temples, the temple has a huge gold colored Buddha statue on top of it.
